Shopping

My resolution for the new year is to go shopping fairly often, even if for only one thing. I have to buy things for me because it’s somehow important. The way I see it, I might as well. I’m not gonna splurge because I still have bills to pay, but buying shit to make me feel good in a grrly way is important.

I bought this really nice purple satin and lace top that makes me smile. I like satin tops because the have that sheen. anyway. That’s my superficial resolution.

Busy Bear is Busy

It’s a very nifty time in my life right now. Probably less of a big deal to others, but I just ordered my first bit of studio gear. A backdrop holder w/ bag and 2 rolls of backdrop paper (black and white). Next comes the REAL lighting. I already have a set picked out. When I make more money,. I’ll upgrade the lights to the Alien Bees B400 or B800… I guess the B800s would be smarter.
Oh yeah… www.alienbees.com

Next is advertising. I’m on networking sites and am redesigning www.avygrrl.com to focus primarily on photography and sales. I still think I’ll use Cafe Press for most things, but I know I can get poster-sized photos done much easier than I thought. Yay.

Anyways, that’s all folks.

Do You Understand?!

I frequent photography forums to learn and grow. I answered a “please critique” post and it seems to me the guy just wanted praise, not true criticism. He had problems with everyone’s comments, not just mine.

My comments are in bold…

The first shot is too dark. You captured her laughter beautifully, but the environment is not lit well enough. If you wanted it to be dark, that’s okay (though out of place with her laughing), but you would need more contrast in the trees.

i dont want to turn your eye into trees, so more contrast is contraproductive, less dark means in this case less almosphere and photo will be flat. try it yourself, you will see… but anyway, i thank you for your suggestions

The second is nice. The right model should have turned her body out more for better symmetry if that matters to you. I really like the shot though. It’s very bright without being too washed out up top.

washed up? there’s no overburns, try historygram in photoshop.
maybe symetry is good way to go. thank you. i will keep it in mind

The third is great. Very dreamy and the landscape orientation gives it graphic/web design appeal. I can see it being the background to an ad or web page.
Good work!

Overwhelmed Much?

Ay yi yi!

I officially wish I worked a part time job. I’m getting so many calls and texts from people from the Shai video that I’m getting confused. I know how much to charge people– but when to shoot? I hate getting so many offers with so little free time. When I’m driving, it’ll be even easier. I need lights and backdrops ASAP — too many portrait requests!

I’m really happy though. To have so many people liking the images. I just feel kinda overwhelmed already. I think I’m gonna have to get more gear really soon. The money from the first shoot will help. I can eventually upgrade the camera after I get all the backdrops, lenses and lighting I want. I need to upgrade the tripod first.

The funny thing is that had it not been for me helping Ari out, I’d have not made the contacts for more paying work. Paying work is good. It helps for the creative work I may have to pay for. I’m really looking forward to working with some of these people! I’ll admit the B.I.G. party is going to be uncomfy for me. WAY too many strangers! Part of being pro is being brave. I’m a brave bear.

Good Tidings

First and foremost: Tanjoubi Omedetou, Erik!
I’m rather happy about tonight and hopefully he has a great time. I’ll spare the details.

As for me, I’ve been a busy bee. I worked on this music video for a rapper by the name of Shai P. I actually like the song and had a great time. I worked long hours and made good contacts. I have a job lined up for 1/18 because of it. Thanks to Ariella for thinking of me for this job. I’m always happy to work with her, and her lighting crew was excellent. I’ve only posted a few pix so far, but they can be found at http://flickr.com/avytech
Here’s some for the lazy people who don’t feel like goin through the Flickr motions:

That last one’s a little overexposed at the top left and right, but I don’t think it’s so bad.
