Words

“To photograph people is to violate them, by seeing them as they never see themselves, by having knowledge of them they can never have; it turns people into objects that can be symbolically possessed. Just as the camera is a sublimation of the gun, to photograph someone is a sublimated murder—a soft murder, appropriate to a sad, frightened time.”
- Susan Sontag

I’m pretty much ready to violate someone. Soon. Any volunteers?

Actually, I have volunteers. I just have to call them. And I don’t want to violate them. For some types of photography, Susan is completely correct. But I don’t want the truth in all my photos. I want to create something. There’s some sort of beauty in all things, even violated things, but don’t want to murder. I’d rather give birth. It’s not easy to shoot what’s already there and make it interesting. I think it is even more difficult to get the image in your mind to translate photographically. Lighting, make up, hair tricks, the right models with the right postures and poses. It all comes together with a lot of thought and work. I get excited when I think about it and frightened at the same time.

Me & Gito Gito Hustler

So this past Saturday I was all set to go see one of my favouritest grrl bands, Gito Gito Hustler. They were scheduled for 4pm, but the show got bumped up to 2pm with no notice! It sucked because I wanted to take sober pictures of them playing and being oh so cute. Also, Erik had never seen them live so he missed out. They’re so fun!

Well even though we couldn’t see them play, we hung out a little afterwards. The girls were really sweet and touch some pictures. Mitsuko gave me her pick and pins. I think Fusa or Tae gave me stickers. haha Mitsuko kept whining and fake crying because we missed the,m. It was a shame, too, cuz Erik and I were just sitting in the house not doing much of anything. Just enjoying the BCT. Actually, that’s somethin kewl right there, but you get me.

Anyway, this is the first of my series of themed photo-posts. I’ve got 100 topics (one worded topics) and I’m happy to post them. I tried the 366 project, but that’s too much of a hassle for me right now. I will continue to try posting daily with these topics, but I’m not bending over backwards.

So today’s payday and in honor of such a nifty day, I went ahead and ordered my Canon 50mm 1.8 lens. Ohhhhh snap. It’s gonna be on! I love my camera.

This pic was taken with my Canon 28-80mm lens and that was at 5.6 if I remember correctly. Anyhoo, I can’t wait til my 50 comes. I’ve seen the quality of the photos taken with it. I think I’ve got enough ability to do great things with it.

I also went ahead and added the best equiptment I could find for my budget. All I need now is space. The goal is for Erik and I to have a 3BR house. This offers 1BR for us, 1BR for his office, 1BR for mine. I think that’s a good idea. A basement would be best for photos (more space), but I’ll take what I can get!

I’m really happy.
